The Florida palmetto is native to Southeastern United States. It occurs on sandy shores, in upland hardwoods, flatwoods, tropical hammocks, swamps, blackish marshes, coastal dunes and wet prairies throughout the Southern United States. It is the most popular tree in Florida, coastal Georgia and South Carolina.

The Florida palmetto naturally grows in peninsular Florida, the Florida keys, Georgia, South Carolina, the Bahamas and Cuba.
